Why We Stand for the Reading of the Scripture
Stand and let your heart hear the words of the Living God! It is the tradition of people of God to stand up during the Scripture reading to show honor for the Word. Scripture does not instruct us to do so. Instead, Scripture focuses on the issue of the heart rather than the form used. Sitting or standing isn’t as important as the receptivity of one’s heart. Nevertheless, in Bible times and throughout the history of the church, the public readings of the scripture have been the pinnacle of the worship service. In Nehemiah 8: 1-6, Ezra the scribe stood on a high platform to read the Scripture to the people who had just returned from exile. As he did, the people listened attentively and stood up in unison without prompting.
